#1 Cigar Aficionado Top 25 Cigars 2011

Alan Rubin created a blend called Alec Bradley Prensado. Rubin had smoked a very dark wrapper leaf grown in a region of southern Honduras called Trojes and decided to build a cigar brand around it, using Central American tobacco exclusively. And what a cigar he made.

The brand hit the market in 2009 and was acclaimed from the very beginning. In a vertical brand tasting in Cigar Insider of the five original sizes, each scored 91 points or more and earned our accolade of Humidor Selection. The Alec Bradley Prensado Churchill, made at the superb Raices Cubanas factory in Danlí, Honduras, is as gorgeous a cigar as you'll ever see, with a picture-perfect head and a stunning wrapper. But it is the flavor that makes it a classic smoke. The Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos come together to create leather, chocolate and spice notes, and a long, lush finish.

The term “Angel’s Share” is used in the wine-making process. Winemakers often use oak barrels to store their wine during the aging process. When the wine ages for long periods of time, some of it will evaporate from the barrel. The evaporated wine is called the Angel’s Share, alluding to the belief that the guardian angels that watch over the wine, sample it and give their blessings.

Since Fuente lost so much priceless aged tobacco during the fire in 2012, the inspiration for this cigar came from that exact term.

The burned-down warehouses contained tobacco that had been aging since the late 40s and 50s. The Fuente family was saving it for the special 100-year anniversary. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be, as the fire consumed much of the precious tobacco. It made the family extremely sad and depressed, but out of that came the Angel’s Share cigar.

From this, it is implied that the Angels enjoyed the enticing aroma from the tobacco that burned in the barns but in turn, gave their blessings to the Fuente family for future successful endeavors.

The Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share uses a wrapper from the middle priming of the tobacco plant as opposed to the top priming from which Fuente Fuente OpusX are typically made. Carlos Fuente Jr. focused more on this part of the plant, which he believes is where most of the heart and flavour is.

Robert Caldwell's affinity for cigars began after visiting Ernesto Perez-Carrillo's factory in Little Havana when he was just 12 years old. Davidoff Black Band Limited Edition 2022 Gran Toro, a thick medley of sorts that combines tobacco from all three of its existing Black Band lines—Davidoff Nicaragua, Escurio and Yamasá.

At 5 1/2 inches long by 58 ring gauge, it’s made with an Ecuadoran wrapper, Brazilian binder and plenty of room for the filler blend of all the key Black Band tobaccos: Dominican, Nicaraguan and Brazilian.

In 1946, Zino Davidoff designed a line of cigars which would be crafted like classic Bordeaux wines. The blend would be selected depending on the soil and the climate in which the tobacco grew, just like the French ‘terroirs’.  Voilá, Davidoff Grand Cru cigars were born. Now, like the rich, ripe grapes of Bordeaux, the fruits of another piece of innovation have been harvested and turned into a truly remarkable cigar, one even more deserving of the title Grand Cru.

For the Diademas Finas Limited Edition Collection incorporates tobacco aged in Premier Grand Cru red wine casks from Bordeaux. In the spirit of Zino’s pioneering blends, this is the first time where a winecask aged tobacco has been used.

A San Vicente seco tobacco is matured for six months in the casks. As a result, the flavour carries the same notes which characterise the chateaux wines – dark cherries, walnuts and citrus. The combination rolls around in the mouth like wine being swirled in a glass. To add extra distinctiveness to this Limited Edition, it comes in the striking figurado format. The shape guides the palate towards the richness of the blend. Perfect to accompany a vintage bottle from France’s most celebrated wine region. For this is truly vintage Davidoff.

The Davidoff Grand Cru No. 2 is a slightly longer Corona, higher proportion of Ligero tobacco gives the complex nut and wood flavors of Grand Cru No. 2 unforeseen strength and depth. The Grand Cru No. 2 is mild in strenght, but full in complexed flavors.

In the Millennium blend, ligero and visus grade leaves come together for deep aromas. The unique 151 wrapper leaf contributes to an oily appearance and pronounced and complex flavours. Davidoff Millennium Piramides with its tapered head is crafted my the most highly skilled torcedores only. Its 52-ring gauge allows for the blend to give off intense flavours. Initially, daring notes of oak wood and coffee accompany aromas of sweet prunes. In the second third, dark chocolate complements intense bouquets of almonds and white pepper. At the cigar's grand finale, pronounced flavours of peat are finished with piquant white pepper and liquorice.

Story behind the cigar
Each Millennium format is made with a unique wrapper from Ecuador. It took the Master Blenders 300 trials before trial number 151 reached their demanding standards for a wrapper leave. Hybrid 151 grows under the tropical sun in Ecuador at a finca especially chosen for its location and its unique microclimate.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this modern classic, Davidoff's Master Blenders set out anew to explore, adventure and discover, this time to climb to new heights of taste to match Nicaragua’s volcanic peaks.

The result is an experience of another level.

The tobaccos in this Limited Edition have been aged for an incredible total of 45 years.

Adding to the already-aged filler, binder and wrapper, Davidoff's Master Blenders also introduced a 9-year-old Estelí tobacco to the mix for the first time. But still they continued to pursue the extraordinary.

Not content with unearthing a new Nicaraguan variety, they aged the Estelí in rum casks for added depth and distinctiveness. Embarking through notes of roasted nuts, the taste gives way to oak wood and ends intensely with black coffee.

Due to the gran toro’s complexity, flavours and its full body, an ideal pairing companion to enhance the experience is a Nicaraguan rum. Its spicy notes and generally less sweet taste complement the cigar’s main aromas of roasted nuts, oak wood and black coffee nicely.
