Alan Rubin created a blend called Alec Bradley Prensado. Rubin had smoked a very dark wrapper leaf grown in a region of southern Honduras called Trojes and decided to build a cigar brand around it, using Central American tobacco exclusively. And what a cigar he made.

The brand hit the market in 2009 and was acclaimed from the very beginning. In a vertical brand tasting in Cigar Insider of the five original sizes, each scored 91 points or more and earned our accolade of Humidor Selection. The Alec Bradley Prensado Churchill, made at the superb Raices Cubanas factory in Danlí, Honduras, is as gorgeous a cigar as you'll ever see, with a picture-perfect head and a stunning wrapper. The term “Angel’s Share” is used in the wine-making process. Winemakers often use oak barrels to store their wine during the aging process. When the wine ages for long periods of time, some of it will evaporate from the barrel. The evaporated wine is called the Angel’s Share, alluding to the belief that the guardian angels that watch over the wine, sample it and give their blessings.

Since Fuente lost so much priceless aged tobacco during the fire in 2012, the inspiration for this cigar came from that exact term.

The burned-down warehouses contained tobacco that had been aging since the late 40s and 50s. The Fuente family was saving it for the special 100-year anniversary. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be, as the fire consumed much of the precious tobacco. It made the family extremely sad and depressed, but out of that came the Angel’s Share cigar.

From this, it is implied that the Angels enjoyed the enticing aroma from the tobacco that burned in the barns but in turn, gave their blessings to the Fuente family for future successful endeavors.

The Fuente Fuente OpusX Angel’s Share uses a wrapper from the middle priming of the tobacco plant as opposed to the top priming from which Fuente Fuente OpusX are typically made. Carlos Fuente Jr. focused more on this part of the plant, which he believes is where most of the heart and flavour is.

In 1946, Zino Davidoff designed a line of cigars which would be crafted like classic Bordeaux wines. The blend would be selected depending on the soil and the climate in which the tobacco grew, just like the French ‘terroirs’. Maduro’s sweet and creamy flavours are owed 40% to the wrapper alone, which was fermented for an impressive 16 months. Compared to leaves from other grades, the fermentation of the Maduro wrapper takes double the amount of time, because the perfect leaf for a Maduro cigar is one from the top of the plant, where it gets the most sunshine and is therefore quite thick.

The sweetness of dark chocolate in the first third and honey in the second third are key players in this delightful experience. The addition of roasted nuts in the final third completes this typical Maduro taste experience.

Story behind the cigar
Each Millennium format is made with a unique wrapper from Ecuador. It took the Master Blenders 300 trials before trial number 151 reached their demanding standards for a wrapper leave. The tobaccos in this Limited Edition have been aged for an incredible total of 45 years.

Adding to the already-aged filler, binder and wrapper, Davidoff's Master Blenders also introduced a 9-year-old Estelí tobacco to the mix for the first time. But still they continued to pursue the extraordinary.

Not content with unearthing a new Nicaraguan variety, they aged the Estelí in rum casks for added depth and distinctiveness. Embarking through notes of roasted nuts, the taste gives way to oak wood and ends intensely with black coffee.

Due to the gran toro’s complexity, flavours and its full body, an ideal pairing companion to enhance the experience is a Nicaraguan rum. Its spicy notes and generally less sweet taste complement the cigar’s main aromas of roasted nuts, oak wood and black coffee nicely.

While each of the tobaccos has a considerable individual age, the combined age of all 7 tobaccos is an impressive 111 years. This makes the Oro Blanco Special Reserve 111 Years the cigar with the most aged tobacco on the market. The Year of the Dragon Limited Edition completes Davidoff’s cycle of twelve consecutive celebrations around a Chinese zodiac. The brand honors the important year with several limited-edition products inspired by the Dragon and its fascinating personality.

The powerful Dragon requires an equal format, making this zodiac’s cigar the biggest creation out of all “Year of” executions to date. The double corona carries an eye-catching foot ring which covers the uncut part of the cigar. This enables aficionados to enjoy the first inch/2.5 cm of the masterpiece without the wrapper leaf, which creates an intriguing play of flavors and visualizes the Dragon spitting fire.

The blend consists of 8 tobaccos, combined for a total of 60 years aging. In 2024, this number will match the age of a person born in 1964, which is also a Year of the Dragon. Translated to English, “Liga Privada” means “private blend.” It is the perfect name, as this cigar was originally crafted not for resale, but for the personal humidors of Drew Estate. Dozens of intricate blends were created, but No. 9 was flawless in both flavour and character. Seven different tobaccos from seven distinct vegas are included. The wrapper is hand fermented for 18+ months & no sweat is allowed. Only four pairs within the Drew Estate factory are certified to produce these cigars & each pair is allowed to craft only 250 cigars per day. The cigars are then aged for a full year before being offered for sale.

Rich, complex and full bodied without being harsh, this amazing vitola is best described in one word: satisfying. Lush, earthy and espresso like with an incredibly dense body.

The basic tenant of the Bauhaus architectural movement is that every object must have a purpose in design. The new Liga Privada Bauhaus Short Robusto pays extra attention to leaf placement within the cigar, intentionally designed to take our European aficionados through a newly curated experience. Bauhaus is a 114mm x 50 Short Robusto that is wrapped in a rich, earthy Connecticut Broadleaf capa, includes a bold Brazilian binder, and is completed using filler tobaccos from Honduras and Nicaragua. The Liga Privada Unico Serie Bauhaus is packaged in an elegant blue 12-count box with gold embossing.

This request was met with the disappointment you would expect, but rather than being disgruntled they responded by blending their own signature liga. Incorporating many of the same rare tobaccos, but of different vintages and primings, the cigar they created was no mere replacement. Rather it is an exceptional smoking experience of uncompromising quality and flavour that deserves to be smoked by all.

Another new Encore release, Edición Unica, wears a lighter-colored Nicaraguan wrapper, while the binder is also Nicaraguan and the filler contains Nicaraguan and Dominican tobacco. The tobacco is said to be well-aged, with the wrapper being at least five years old, while the binder and filler are said to be at least 10 years old.

It is debuting in a 6 x 56 toro gordo size that the company calls Solidarios. It is limited to 1,500 boxes of 10 cigars, all of which are destined for retailers outside of the United States.
